Every move with Dan The Moving Man comes with free coverage for your belongings. This page explains how much is covered, what your deductible is, what’s included and excluded, and how to add extra protection for high-value items.

Coverage at a Glance

Coverage Amount
Free coverage per move $5,000
Deductible $250
Maximum coverage per item $1,000
Coverage per truckload $100,000
Basic liability rate (late or unqualified claims) $0.60 per pound

Your Free Coverage

$5,000 per move. If something we handle is lost or damaged during your move, your free coverage pays up to $5,000 in total. There’s nothing to sign up for and nothing to pay.

$1,000 per item. No single item is covered for more than $1,000. If you own something worth more, see Full Valuation Coverage below.

$250 deductible. The deductible is the portion of a covered claim you pay before our coverage applies.

Report damage the same day. Claims must be made on the day of your move. Because everything we pack must be unpacked by our crew the same day, your crew can inspect any damage with you on the spot.

How the $0.60-Per-Pound Rate Works

The $0.60-per-pound rate is the basic liability rate that applies when your claim doesn’t qualify for your free coverage. For example, if you report damage after moving day, we reimburse by weight instead of by value. Under this rate, a 50-pound item is reimbursed at $30, no matter what it cost to buy.

Your free $5,000 coverage is the stronger protection, but it depends on following the claim rules above. Full Valuation Coverage replaces weight-based reimbursement with the declared value of your items.

Truckload Coverage: Up to $100,000

Every truck we send out carries up to $100,000 in coverage for the cargo on board. Where covered by our policy, this protects belongings from events like:

  • Vehicle accidents. Collision, rollover, or other road incidents involving the moving truck.
  • Tornadoes and severe weather. Damage from tornadoes or other covered storm events.
  • Rain damage. Water damage to your belongings from rain while loading, in transit, or unloading.

Truckload coverage protects the cargo on the truck as a whole. Your own claim is still subject to your $5,000 per-move limit, $1,000 per-item limit, and $250 deductible.

What’s Covered

Everything we pack must be unpacked by our crew on the same day. When we pack and document your items, coverage includes:

  • TVs, electronics, appliances, and furniture. Cracked screens, units that stop working because of impact, and significant wear incurred in transit.
  • Visible surface damage. Scratches, dents, gouges, and chipped finishes on wood, plastic, metal, or glass.
  • Boxes. Crushed, broken, or water-damaged boxes.
  • Mattresses and box springs. When enclosed in mattress bags and moved by us.
  • Art, mirrors, and glass. When properly crated or padded and moved by us.
  • Major appliances. External damage to refrigerators, washers, and dryers.
  • Musical instruments. Any damage.

If damage occurs, we’ll work with you to repair the item to like-new condition.

TV packing: TVs require special packing. Use one of our TV boxes for a $50 rental fee, or purchase packing supplies for $100.

What’s Not Covered

  • Customer-packed items. Damage to boxes or items you packed yourself, even if we transport them.
  • Items not properly boxed by us. This includes unboxed fragile items like glassware, lamps, and ceramics.
  • Electronics with no visible exterior damage. Internal malfunction claims without external evidence of impact.
  • Mechanical or electrical failures. For example, a working appliance that stops functioning after the move but shows no signs of impact.
  • Hot tubs and large outdoor equipment. Not covered unless there’s physical evidence of mishandling, such as being dropped.
  • Undeclared high-value items. Items over $100 per pound that aren’t listed in your inventory or lack an appraised value.
  • Pre-existing damage. Scratches, dents, or wear recorded before the move.
  • Jewelry, cash, and important documents. We strongly advise keeping these with you.
  • Plants and perishables. Not covered under any circumstances due to spoilage risk.
  • Non-climate-controlled storage. Water, heat, mold, or pest damage in unregulated environments.

Storage Coverage Add-On

If your belongings go into storage, storage coverage is available as an add-on. Storage increases risk (fire and water damage, for example), so coverage requires climate-controlled storage and a monthly fee of 15% of your insurance cost. For example, a $500 policy adds $75 per month. With the add-on, your belongings are covered in climate-controlled storage, including acts of God.

Need More Protection? Full Valuation Coverage

Our free coverage is a strong baseline. For high-value furniture, electronics, and artwork, Full Valuation Coverage protects your items at their declared replacement value. If an item is lost, damaged, or destroyed, we repair it, replace it, or offer a cash settlement up to the amount you declared.

Declared Value Items Covered
$20,000 Up to 15 items
$30,000 Up to 25 items
$40,000 Up to 35 items
$50,000 Up to 45 items

For every additional $10,000 in declared value, 10 more items can be covered.

You must submit your pre-move inventory form before your move date.
